Club Thangs, May 20140

Well, the race scene (both nationally and locally) has begun in earnest for Club members. The Mon Arfon League series of time trials began in April, with wins for Garry Ellis (Holyhead CC “10”) and Gareth McGuinness ( Clwb Rasio Mona “10”), with Alun Williams, Dylan Griffiths, Wayne Owen and Mathew Nottingham taking top ten places. Gwydion Roberts leads the Juniors, whilst Jack Williams leads the Youth’s competition. In the Inter Club Competition, Energy Cycles Club is dominating once again. Both events were well supported by riders from all participating clubs. For full details and results please go to

The local cyclo sportive event season began with the Gran Fondo Conwy, organised by Always Aim High Events. Over 600 riders lined up on the quay in Conwy to test themselves on three demanding courses over various distances.

In the Gran Fondo Bach, Robert Fogg and Huw “Post” Williams took top ten places in the men’s event after stomping round the course. Whilst Tabitha Angle-Smith took 11th spot in the women’s event.

In the Canol, Energy Cycles Club junior riders Owain Williams, Jack Williams (who was an early leader in the “Storm the Orme” competition, and eventually fastest junior over this timed section) and Huw Owen rode wisely to take 1st, 2nd and 5th respectively in their first sportive. And in the process taking some very respectable scalps. David Chidley surprised himself (but not his Club mates!!) by coming home in 7th, and Mark Briggs close behind in 11th place.

The Fawr, a different kettle of fish altogether, proved to be a greater challenge than expected. Many riders exclaiming that it was tougher than the forthcoming Etape Eryri. Some riders succumbed to cramp, dehydration and even the knock during this mammoth adventure. The heavy roads and multiple climbs taking their toll. The Energy Cycles Club colour’s  were again to the fore, Garry Ellis and Mathew Nottingham finishing in 4th and 5th, with Club Chairman, Meirion Davies in 9th.  New Club member, Steph Duits taking 4th in the women’s event. Congratulation and well done to all the Club’s riders who took part, and including those not mentioned, but you know who you are…..

The Wednesday evening rides are once again proving popular this year. There are two rides leaving from Plas Silyn Sports Centre in Penygroes at 6.00pm. One is a pure “recovery” ride, the other one is for those riders who wish to have a “blast” and do some serious work on their bikes. Please follow the Club Facebook page for up to date information.

A weekly road training session has started from Plas Silyn Sports Centre at 6.30pm on Thursday’s (subject to races and weather conditions). Various types of short, high intensity training takes place for any Club member who is interested in upping their game. Please follow the Club Facebook page for up to date information.

The May edition of the Road Events Calendar should be in your e-mail inboxes. There are few additions to the previous edition, and some cancellations. Please note, the calendar details all our Club time trials and hill climb dates and locations. Also shown are the dates and locations of events included in the MA League, and GCA time trial series.

And finally, the Club membership continues to grow in 2014. A warm welcome to new members, James Franks, Dylan Griffiths, Arwel Wyn Jones and father and son team, Andrew and Osian Craig. Some of these guys you will already know from meeting them on the Club rides or at the local time trials, however please make them all feel welcome and a part of our fantastic club.

Till next time……
