The 2015 Welsh National 10 Mile Time Trial Championship – 16.08.150

Last Sunday saw a full field of riders face the time keeper in the Welsh National 10 Mile Individual Time Trial Championships, promoted by Pontypool Road Cycling Club on the Abergavenny to Raglan course in South Wales.

Energy Cycles Junior Road Team members Jack Williams and Huw Owen, along with Club members Alun Williams and Garry Ellis took the trip south to test themselves against some of the best riders in the country, and they didn’t come away disappointed.

The weather conditions were ideal for this form of cycle racing, where individual riders are set off a one minute intervals and the fastest rider over the distance is the winner. The junior and women’s events were run early in the day, when the warm sun and light winds benefited all the competitors, particularly for the two youngsters.

In the Junior Championship, Jack Williams produced a time of 22 minutes and 42 seconds, and took the silver medal behind George Evans (Mid Shropshire Wheelers), and at the same time improving his personal best time over the 10 miles.

In the Youth Championship, Huw Owen took the gold medal and the title of Welsh National Champion 2015 for his outstanding ride of 23 minutes and 9 seconds, all this despite being delayed at the turn on the outward leg of the race and losing approximately 30 seconds.

In the Men’s Championship, Alun Williams produced a personal best time of 21 minutes and 53 seconds, which placed him 47th overall, and was “happy with that…” However our man on form, Garry Ellis produced a superb time of 21 minutes and 21 seconds, and 25th overall.

Race organiser, Dax Jenkins of the promoting club, congratulated Jack and Huw on their performances by saying “That it is riders with quality all round abilities that win championships, and these two riders have that in bucket loads.”

Both these riders started cycling in the winter of 2013/14, and with the help of their parents, team and generous sponsors they are able to perform on the national  scene for young racing cyclists. They and their team mates are rising stars and ones to watch out for in the future.
